MACHIAS and ORONO, Maine (August 10, 2023) UCU has announced plans to open a location in the Down East region within Powers Hall at the University of Maine at Machias campus. With this location, UCU will be placing its fourth on-campus location within the University of Maine System, expanding to eight total locations spanning across the state, supporting both the campus and local communities with financial products, services and resources.

“Since opening our doors on the University of Maine campus more than fifty years ago, UCU has been here for our members both on and off campus, from all across Maine,” said Renee Ouellette, President and CEO of UCU. “In addition to the membership eligibility through the UMaine affiliation, there are now a variety of ways Mainers are eligible to join UCU. This new location will provide local services for our current members in the Down East region, and invite the entire community to experience the variety of ways UCU can help them in their financial well-being.”

The location will be staffed by one of UCU’s Community Engagement Managers. UCU CEMs are banking professionals who are positive, passionate, and motivated ambassadors for UCU and the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people.’ The engagement manager, in addition to coordinating traditional banking services on location, will be responsible for building relationships with community stakeholders to advance the financial well-being of people by hosting financial education workshops and events, volunteering, serving on nonprofit boards and committees, and facilitating opportunities for financial sponsorship.

Located in a historic town on Maine’s Bold Coast, UMaine Machias’ campus is surrounded by premier outdoor recreation opportunities, from kayaking and fishing to mountain biking and four-wheeling. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1 and an average class size of fewer than 20 students, UMaine Machias takes pride in fostering a strong sense of community and connection that begins inside the classroom and extends beyond the boundaries of campus- a dedication it shares with UCU.

“We look forward to having UCU on campus providing financial services for our students, faculty, and staff, as well as the Washington County community,” said Megan Walsh, Dean and Campus Director of the University of Maine at Machias.

Powers Hall is centrally located in downtown Machias right on U.S. Route 1 and is conveniently accessible for the community on the UMaine Machias campus and those from the surrounding area.

Construction on the UCU location in Powers Hall is scheduled to begin by July 31, 2023, for completion in the fall.
