Tap Declined? Don’t Panic. Your Card May Still Work.
Have you ever tried to make a purchase using the tap-to-pay feature on your debit or credit card only to have it decline? If so, your first thought might be, “something must be wrong with my card.”
The good news is that a contactless decline does not necessarily mean your card itself has been blocked, or that other payment methods with that card will be declined too.
Why Would Tap-to-Pay be Declined?
Financial institutions continuously monitor fraud trends to help protect members from unauthorized transactions. Occasionally, fraud patterns emerge that are tied to a specific merchant, geographic area, or type of transaction.
When this happens, your financial institution may put temporary safeguards in place to reduce risk. In some cases, those safeguards may affect contactless, or “tap-to-pay,” transactions at specific locations.
This means a “tap-to-pay” transaction could be declined even though your card is otherwise in good standing and available for use.
Try Another Way to Pay
If your contactless payment is declined, try not to assume your card won’t work.
Depending on the situation, you may still be able to successfully complete your purchase by:
- Inserting your card into the chip reader
- Swiping your card (where accepted)
- Selecting Debit and entering your PIN
- Selecting Credit and signing if required
These payment methods use different transaction pathways and may not be affected by the same fraud prevention controls that impact contactless transactions.
Protection Without Disruption
Fraudsters constantly look for new ways to compromise payment cards, and financial institutions regularly adjust security measures to stay ahead of emerging threats.
While these protections may occasionally create an inconvenience, they are designed to help safeguard your account and reduce the likelihood of fraudulent transactions.
Our goal is always to strike the right balance between protecting your money and providing a convenient payment experience.
What Should You Do If a Transaction Declines?
If a “tap-to-pay” transaction is declined:
- Try inserting your card into the chip reader.
- If available, choose Debit and enter your PIN or select Credit.
- If the transaction continues to decline, contact us so we can review your account and help determine the cause.
