You may have heard about freezing your credit but might not know what that means. Well, we are here to help defrost any confusion. A credit freeze is a voluntary lock you can place on your credit report with each credit reporting agency, (Transunion, Equifax, and Experian).

When you freeze (or lock) your credit and set a PIN to unfreeze it, you are adding an additional level of security to your report. This means that someone with your stolen identity must also obtain this PIN that you’ve set in order to apply for and open credit in your name. This, however, doesn’t mean you need to unfreeze your credit in order to do things like get insurance, rent an apartment, or apply for a job.

Another great thing about freezing your credit is that it is absolutely free! This enables you to add an extra level of security and peace of mind without incurring additional cost. You can place your credit freeze on each credit reporting agency’s website and manage any temporary lifts in the same place. This makes it quick and easy to unfreeze when you need someone to legitimately access your credit report, like UCU!

As always, it’s still important to monitor your credit. Services such as Kasasa Protect can help alert you of any unexpected inquiries on your credit and enable you to possibly stop a fraudulent loan application while it’s in process.
